So what's the best way for a person to get his or her vitamins?
Protein powders? Cute, little, gummy bears?
Yes, but because one takes supplements doesn't give a justifiable reason to eat foods lacking essential nutrients.
A good source of vitamins come from those fruits and veggies that everyone has been told to eat more of. Who knew?!
The problem, however, is that people assume that they are getting the same or a good amount of vitamins no matter how the fruits or veggies are prepared.
Tempura fried broccoli = healthy?
Why not? I'm eating broccoli aren't I?
Yes, but because of the way that it was prepared, deep-frying, it lost the nutritious content! The more you cook or add heat to a fruit or vegetable, the more you're allowing the fruit or vegetable to release the vitamins and nutrients.
Some vitamins, like the fat-soluble vitamins don't lose their nutrients as quickly. Take carrots for instance: you can boil them until they're nice and soggy, and they'll still have a lot of their Vitamin A intact.
In contrast, if you chop up broccoli or potatoes into smaller pieces and boil those, more vitamins and nutrients will escape because 1) there is more surface area allowing the vitamins to escape, and 2) because of the extended amount of time you're allowing for the nutrients to seep into the water.
So is it better to eat your foods raw? Well not necessarily because you also have to consider digestability! (You don't want to eat your steak raw.. that causes a whole lot more issues)
It is said that light steaming or microwaving is one of the better ways to prepare veggies in order to prevent a significant loss in vitamins while being able to increase digestability!
So remember, when cooking your fruits and vegetables, think about how much you're changing its original form with your choice of preparation!
Happy, healthy eating! (:
